3. Sample Answer band 8.0+
It is believed that visual documentaries constitute a better source of insights into people’s lifestyles all over the globe compared to written accounts. In my opinion, however, this is not true because each form has its own merits.
To start with, video recordings make extremely helpful facilitators due to their liveliness. The reflection of information from textual descriptions into one’s mind relies principally on the reader’s imagination, which is sometimes limited by his understanding of the language being used. Fortunately, visual records help overcome the mentioned barriers by directly showing viewers images and sounds. This could be clearly illustrated by the popular series Rick Steves’ Europe, in which Steves attempts to show his audience numerous things they are unable to fully grasp just by imagining, such as architecture, food, and natural scenery.
Written documents, on the other hand, inform their readers about people’s ways of life during times when no cameras were available. Given the time gap, it would be extravagant to reconstruct these documents into films. If rebuilding the lives of Polish people in Warsaw during the German invasion in World War II, for instance, was already costly, how much more would it demand to produce films about, say, the decline and fall of the Roman Empire? Moreover, people often take it for granted when the information they need is available at the convenience of their audio-visual devices. Meanwhile, a person who actively mines knowledge out of his books cannot help developing intellectually.
In conclusion, I believe that video recordings and written documents should be used reciprocally because each form is communicative in its own way. While films make the depiction more lively, books give their readers not only historical insights that are hard to convert into films but also mental exercise.
