Overall, “Formal study” was the most significant factor driving people to immigrate to the UK, while “A definite job” was the leading reason for emigration. Other reasons, such as “Accompany/join” and “Looking for work,” were less prevalent but still notable.

In 2014, the most common reason for people immigrating to the UK was “Formal study,” accounting for 31% of the total immigration. This was followed closely by those who came for “A definite job,” making up 28%. “Accompany/join,” which refers to people moving to be with family or partners, constituted 14% of immigration, while “Looking for work” and “No reason stated” were responsible for 10% and 7% respectively. The least significant category was “Other,” which made up just 10%.

Regarding emigration from the UK, the primary motivation was “A definite job,” which represented 26% of the total. This was followed by “Formal study” at 28%, showing a similar trend to immigration, though in slightly different proportions. “Accompany/join” also had a notable share at 15%, while “Looking for work” accounted for 14% of emigration.
